What is a dog food topper?

A dog food topper is a complementary product added in a small amount to a dog’s usual meal. It can change aroma, taste or texture, but should not replace complete and balanced dog food.

HAMOK’s Good Dawg toppers use slow-dried ostrich liver ground into a fine powder. The concentrated natural aroma helps coat kibble or mix into wet food, making them convenient for dogs that lose interest in an otherwise suitable meal.

Choose your ostrich liver topper

Ostrich Liver Sprinkle

Made from 100% ground ostrich liver with no grains, fillers or additives. This is the simplest option when your goal is to add liver aroma and flavour to your dog’s regular meal.

Ostrich Liver & Parsley Sprinkle

A limited-ingredient blend of slow-dried ostrich liver and dried parsley. It offers the same strong liver aroma with parsley traditionally used for naturally fresher breath. It does not treat dental disease or the underlying causes of persistent bad breath.

How to use a meal topper

  1. Begin with a very light sprinkle.
  2. Add it to your dog’s normal wet or dry food.
  3. Mix it through the meal if your dog eats only the coated pieces.
  4. Keep the container sealed and stored in a cool, dry place.
  5. Include the topper within your dog’s daily treat allowance.

A topper should encourage interest without teaching your dog to refuse every uncoated meal. Use the smallest effective amount and keep feeding times consistent.

When a fussy eater needs veterinary attention

A dog that occasionally becomes bored with food is different from a dog that suddenly stops eating. Contact your veterinarian if appetite loss is sudden, lasts longer than expected or appears with vomiting, diarrhoea, pain, lethargy, weight loss, dental discomfort or unusual thirst. A food topper can add flavour, but it should never be used to hide signs of illness.

Choosing and feeding dog treats responsibly

Treats are complementary foods and should be given alongside a complete, balanced diet. Choose a size and texture suited to your dog, supervise all treating and chewing, and keep fresh water available. As a practical guideline, treats should contribute no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake. If your dog has a diagnosed allergy, pancreatitis, another medical condition or a prescribed diet, ask your veterinarian before introducing a new treat.

Dog food topper FAQs

Can I add a topper to kibble?

Yes. Sprinkle a small amount over dry food and mix through if preferred.

Is ostrich liver sprinkle a complete dog food?

No. It is a complementary topper and should be used with your dog’s usual complete, balanced diet.

How much should I use?

Start with a light sprinkle. The aroma is concentrated, so more is not necessarily better.

Will parsley cure bad breath?

No. Parsley may provide a fresher note, but persistent bad breath can indicate dental or health problems requiring veterinary advice.
